Project Teach May Violin

Okay, here's the problem. I really want to learn how to play the violin, but being the cheapo that I am (okay la I'm not exactly a cheapo but considering I am not earning yet and don't want to use my parents' money, my budget is very limited) I want to save on lesson fees and learn it myself from teach-yourself-violin/violin-for-dummies kind of books. Question for any violinists who may be reading this: Feasible, or not? And what level of skill can a person who can read music reach just learning from these books alone? I've been surfing the net and Amazon for such books and all of them get mixed reviews from users, I don't know who to listen to! Makes me slightly doubtful about whether or not such books actually teach me how to play the violin properly at the end of the day... Also, what's the minimum price I have to pay for a decent-enough-bordering-on-cheap violin?

These are opinions of a pro i know of. Not by me.

Will be much easier picking up de violin since one already can read notes n read music

my personal opinion...don think books can really
help after a certain level..good enough for some
basics n simple stuff but definitely not enough
for de finer techniques n more advanced
stuff....if one is really serious about de
violin then id really suggest getting proper
instruction....costly..but u pay for wat u get

pricing...mayb bout 200-300 ringgits...mayb
more...but for a decent violin id say spare at
least a 1000 ringgit...for beginners de cheapest one would
do...but one oughta to change to a decent or good
violin as one progresses...

hey, thanks a bunch, anonymous! do u play violin urself? (= mind if i ask who is this pro u speak of? hehe.

mmm.... 200-300 sounds good. was thinking of a budget of about 300 at most. yay!

to be honest i dont really intend to learn the violin to a very advanced level since i doubt once i graduate and start work i'll have time to continue learning. was thinking of just maybe mastering it enough to pass off as a grade 4 (the piano equivalent). u think books can help me reach that? lol

no, that was more of a cynical comment.

in other words, there is no way of passing grade 4 violin just by the books
