Goodness gwacious me, May bought a ROMANCE novel!
Hahahaha.
Did that take you by surprise? Lol. Today I bought a book that a friend of mine very fervently recommended - Erich Segal's Love Story. Scenario at Kinokuniya:
"Should I save time searching the umpteen bookshelves and go straight to the information counter to ask for my book? Hmmm."
But no, I decided that I don't want to 'lose face' by asking for what seems like a sappy romance novel.
So I walk to the General Fiction section, fingers crossed that the book is there, and not at the genre-that-must-not-be-named section instead. Head tilted sideways, scanning from left to right, I start at S.
Ahh! Segal! Two books by Segal, one of which is the one I'm looking for! The cover is plain white with the title and author printed in large capitals, in pink and green. No pictures. Quote at the bottom of the cover says "For someone who is in love, or was in love, or hopes to be in love." Ahh. *smiles* Still, I am slightly put off by the ridiculously large print - easily a 16, I'm sure. Anyway, determined not to be deterred (judge not a book by its font size), I flip to the last page of the book and read the last couple of lines, as is my usual habit. (Doesn't matter, in this case especially, coz I already know the heroine died. Whooops! Did I just let that out? Hahaha)
"Love means never having to say you're sorry."
Hmmmmmmmmm......... Anyway, next sentence:
And then I did what I had never done in his presence, much less in his arms. I cried.
Not very promising at all. At this point, I am thinking to myself, "This had better be worth my time, Chi Wei". Lol.
But nevermind. Next thing to do, since the genre and reputation of the book was highly questionable, I attempted to appease myself by checking that the same title was not in the genre-that-must-not-be-named section as well. And thankfully, it wasn't there. Phew.
So I went and bought the book, paid for it together with the latest issue of Cleo, feeling a tad embarassed. Dahlah romance novel, Cleo pulak tu! Bimbo!! Hahaha.... But I guess I'd already decided even before looking at the book, that I would buy it. Chi Wei said of the book, sure cry one. Although I cry at movies, the only book that has ever made me cry is the Bible. I think Falling Angels came close, and maybe Gone With The Wind too, but no. Haven't really read anything that I find is REALLY of Kleenex Club-material. Still cynical right now, but we'll see how it goes. I'll keep you updated. Haha.
