Tous pour une, une pour tous
All for one, one for all.
Yep. No prizes for guessing what book has been my daily couch companion of late - Alexander Dumas' The Three Musketeers. Delightfully witty (wittily delightful?) book - really enjoying it. Oh, and I'm sad to report that I gave up on Nadine Gordimer's My Son's Story. :-( I made it two-thirds through the book, (and that took me a good one month!) but by then it felt really dry and I decided it just wasn't worth the effort. Was getting quite tired of reading about a black man's extramarital affair with a white lady. The language is too complicated and her sentences can go on and on for miles, with an average of one big word every twenty - a little too pretentious for me lah. In the end, I don't think I've learnt anything much about the South African apartheid at all. Ack.
One of the most annoying things that can happen is when you find yourself singing along (in your head) to a tune which you actually detest. For me, it's Harry Connick Jr's take on 'For Once In My Life'. Such an adulteration of a great Stevie Wonder song. Tsk tsk. I don't know why Light & Easy just LOVES playing it so much - I, for one, feel like strangling Harry Connick Jr each time I hear that screechy violin intro. Simply atrocious! And the song was stuck in my head the whole of last night... grrrr!
A bad good dream. Ever had one of those?
I did, two nights ago. It was a good dream while it lasted - oh yes, it was - but when I woke up, I was filled with a myriad of unpleasant feelings. Confusion, slight disgust at myself, annoyance, frustration, and last but not least - sadness.
Why do people dream dreams? What makes people dream what they dream? To me, it's one of those questions in life to which you will never ever know the answer - kinda like the chicken and egg question, or the question of why the chicken crossed the road..... *snigger*
Yesterday I attended one of those typical Malaysian Chinese family dinners at Oversea Restaurant. Actually, come to think of it, it's no different from any other Chinese dinner la - except for the karaoke. Yes. Mind you, this is no fun-filled Redbox karaoke session with your best buddies (in which the main staple is the likes of Stevie Wonder, Usher, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, R&B, alt-rock and so on). They sang mostly old Chinese songs which I've never heard before, and some 90's HK-pop, besides the usual karaoke essentials 'Stand By Me', 'Unchained Melody' and 'Top of the World'. Oh yes, and also 'London Bridge Is Falling Down'. *cringe* It started off hilarious, then mildly amusing, then boring, and after like 10 minutes, it just started to annoy me to the bone. Doesn't make it any better when at just about every interval, a kid grabs the mic and hollers into it at the top of his/her voice, much to the adoration of his/her doting parents, and the chagrin of 'normal' people like myself.
Well, the past week has been quite an eventful one, both energy- and financially-draining. Spent two bombs on two separate shopping sprees at Lot 10/KL Plaza, but I'm very happy with the stuff I bought! A leather bag, evening gowns, a most gorgeous pair of black heels, yet another pair of leather boots... Of course, the inevitable feeling of guilt over spending so much of my parents' money is still there, though. Who ever said your every financial need would be completely taken care of by your scholarship anyway? :-P
Ooh, before I forget - HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY, MALAYSIA!:-D
